TFT-LCD production line launched in Wuhan, Hubei (Source: BEIJING (Metal-Pages) on 19-Nov-08)

Hubei Province has invested RMB 4 billion ($587 million) on a TFT-LCD production line which could be seen as the largest investment the province has made in 2008. It is designed to produce small units of LCD modules mainly used for mobile phones, digital cameras, vidicon and so on. Shenzhen Tianma Microelectronics Co Ltd and Hubei Technology have already invested in this production line, which would be put into production in 2010 and expected to have sales of RMB 2.5 billion ($366 million).  

Indium is one of the main raw materials for LCD modules. Due to the sluggish demand and with business just ticking over, the whole market has been weak in the past months. No overseas buyers were interested in buying indium which only offered at $400/kg by a Hunan-based producer. The lower domestic indium price was sitting on RMB 2,000-2,100/kg although some suppliers have been holding prices at RMB 2,300-2,400/kg.

However, many market players are still bullish on the outlook for demand for TFT-LCD in the longer term.
